Former UVI President Dr. Orville E. Kean Passes, UVI Honors His Lasting Legacy

The University of the Virgin Islands on Sunday announced the passing of its third president, Dr. Orville E. Kean, whose leadership and vision left an indelible mark on the institution and the territory. Dr. Kean, who served as UVI president from 1990 until his retirement in 2002, was conferred the title of President Emeritus in recognition of his accomplishments and impact during his tenure. Dr. Kean began his career at the then College of the Virgin Islands in 1966 as a Professor of Mathematics. Over the years, he advanced through numerous roles, including Vice Chair of the Science and Mathematics Division, Dean of Instruction, Acting Director of the Caribbean Research Institute, Executive Vice President, and Director of the Eastern Caribbean Center. He ultimately served as Acting Vice President for Academic Affairs before being appointed as UVI’s president in 1990.
