Senator and lieutenant governor candidate Tregenza Roach will be interviewed on the Virgin Islands Political Consortium (VIPC) today at 4:45 p.m., The Consortium has confirmed. While the publication has not interviewed lieutenant governor candidates this election cycle, the interview with Mr. Roach, according to VIPC host Ernice Gilbert, will focus on the upcoming special session called by Governor Kenneth Mapp on the free tuition bill. The session has been scheduled for Friday morning.
Mr. Roach, who originally authored a free tuition bill in 2013, and, according to Senate President Myron Jackson, has maintained authorship of the measure, intends to reintroduce his bill. When exactly it will be reintroduced has not been announced, although the senator told The Consortium last week that he would have lobbied his colleagues in an attempt to get the measure on the Senate floor this week.
The session, which will be carried live on The Consortium’s Facebook platform and website, is expected to garner a lot of attention, as the free tuition matter holds a high level of interest in the community. The initiative’s quick passage was recommended by UVI President David Hall, who said a delay in approving the bill would jeopardize the implementation of the initiative, which is set for Fall 2019 — a move that would affect hundreds of Virgin Islands students.
