ST. CROIX — A routine patrol led to the arrest of a local man for illegal gun possession in the Sion Farm area of St. Croix on Wednesday, the V.I. Police Department has announced.

The VIPD's Special Operations Bureau officers made the arrest after a K9 unit detected a weapon in the suspect's vehicle.

During the patrol, officers noticed two men acting suspiciously as they quickly exited a white Toyota Tacoma and locked it. A K9 officer and his trained partner, specialized in weapons and ammunition detection, approached the vehicle. The dog gave a positive alert, indicating the presence of a firearm.

Upon receiving consent from the registered owner of the truck, officers conducted a search and found a Walter P .45 Caliber handgun inside the glove compartment. Jamal Roebuck, 41, who was present during the search, claimed ownership of the firearm.

Following the discovery, Roebuck was arrested and charged with carrying of a firearm openly or concealed and possession or sale of ammunition. He is currently held on a $50,000 bail pending further legal proceedings
