ST. THOMAS — A man accused of burglarizing Red’s Hang Out in Anna’s Fancy on two consecutive occasions is facing felony charges after police say surveillance footage captured him entering the business and removing electronic equipment, seafood and other perishable food items.

According to court documents, police were first alerted Tuesday morning after a burglary was reported at Red’s Hang Out. Responding officers met with the business owner, who said she had locked and secured the establishment on Sunday and later discovered that it had been burglarized.

The owner showed police surveillance footage, which reportedly showed a man accessing the property in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Police say the video clearly showed the man entering the business and removing multiple items from the establishment.

According to the owner, the stolen property included electronic equipment worth at least $500, along with several hundred dollars’ worth of seafood and other perishable food items.

Based on the surveillance footage, police concluded that the man appeared to have acted alone during the burglary, spending about two hours on the property while removing items belonging to the business. Officers also noted that surveillance footage captured the same individual on the property on several previous occasions, conduct they found consistent with someone carrying out a surveillance operation of the location.

A detective with the Criminal Investigation Bureau identified the man in the footage as Clifton King, who police said was known through “prior law enforcement contacts.”

After police began looking for him, officers said they may have spotted Mr. King near Red’s Hang Out on Tuesday night, but the person fled on foot before they could make contact.

On Wednesday afternoon, the owner of Red’s Hang Out reported that the business had been burglarized again. Surveillance footage showed the man police had already identified as Mr. King entering the establishment once more and again removing items, according to police. This time, the owner said a vehicle arrived to pick him up after the burglary.

Officers searching the area later located King walking along Windward Passage, near Veterans Drive. He was detained and taken to the Criminal Investigation Bureau, where he declined to provide a statement.

Police said they later learned that a “substantial quantity” of food items, believed to be at least some of the stolen goods, had been distributed among a group of local vagrants “and consumed during a gathering in the vicinity of Luciano Bar.”

King was arrested and charged with two counts of third degree burglary and two counts of grand larceny. He appeared before Magistrate Simone Van Holten Turnbull for his advice of rights hearing.

In court on Thursday, the judge found probable cause to uphold the charges against King. Bail was set at $25,000, with $250 payable in cash to secure his release ahead of trial.

As part of his bail conditions, King must report to the probation office every week in person. He must also undergo a psychological evaluation by Department of Health officials by July 15, comply with any recommendations from that evaluation, and ensure that a report from the evaluation is submitted to the court by July 20.

King’s next court appearance is scheduled for June 26.
