A fatal one-vehicle accident occurred on Catherine’s Rest Road, Route 83, near a Jewish Synagogue on Sat. Aug. 26, 2023.
ST. CROIX — A fatal one-vehicle automobile collision occurred on Catherine’s Rest Road, Route 83, near a Jewish Synagogue during the early hours of Saturday, the VIPD has confirmed to the Consortium following an inquiry.
The accident took place on the western shoulder of the northbound lane, resulting in a vehicle engulfed in flames.
Officers from the Patrol division at Ancilmo Marshall Command were dispatched to the scene at approximately 12:05 a.m. Upon their arrival, they immediately called the Fire Department via 911. A fire engine from the Herbert L. Canegata Fire Station in Richmond arrived quickly and successfully extinguished the fire, according to the VIPD.
After the fire was put out, officers discovered a male individual in the driver’s seat of a Jeep Wrangler. Due to the severity of the crash and the fire, the individual could not be positively identified at this time, and the identification process is pending.
The Traffic Investigation Bureau was notified and initiated an investigation into the crash. Preliminary findings indicate that the vehicle was heading southbound on Catherine’s Rest Road when the driver lost control. The vehicle veered into the northbound lane and struck a tree on the western shoulder of the road, causing it to flip onto its side and catch fire. The initial cause of the fire remains unknown.
The Traffic Investigation Bureau continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident. Further information will be released as the investigation progresses.
