ST. THOMAS- A man previously arrested on assault charges is before the court once more after he allegedly assaulted his ex-girlfriend.
Thierre Louis was charged with third-degree assault, simple assault and disturbance of the peace. Court documents allege that Louis physically assaulted his ex-girlfriend after they drove to a beach on Tuesday afternoon. The woman told police that they sat in the car for a while before she left the vehicle and took a walk on the beach. Upon her return, Louis reportedly started to argue with her about leaving the car and then slapped her. She struck him back and he responded, ‘yeah?’ and allegedly began punching her in the face, according to the probable cause fact sheet.
According to the victim, she began to hold Louis’s hands in self-defense but he then bit her multiple times. The fight continued and the pair ended up in the backseat, at which point she was able to exit the vehicle after realizing that her face was bloodied. She said that Louis followed her on the beach saying, “I should kill you” to which she responded, “you should kill me?” He then allegedly picked up a large rock which he placed to her head but later dropped.
The victim then asked Louis if they could leave and he agreed. She dropped him off at his car but while waiting for him to exit her vehicle, he slapped her once more, according to the probable cause fact sheet. She told police that she initially did not hit him back which prompted him to begin saying, “oh you is a punk!” At that point the woman reacted by hitting Louis back and another fight ensued. He then told her that she could not leave because she would call the police and instead drove her car to his house and instructed her to go inside. She said that when she refused, Louis dragged her in by her shirt and tried to fight her in the house, causing one of his relatives to pull him away from her. She then ran out of the house and drove to the hospital where police were called.
Officers noted that they observed bruises to the woman’s body and she reported fractures to her toe, finger and nose. Police attempts to contact Louis by telephone were unsuccessful, as were initial efforts to locate him both at his residence and another area he reportedly frequented. However, he was eventually arrested at his home on Saturday morning. When police informed him that he was being arrested for assault, Louis reportedly told the officer, ‘but she came to me.’ He declined to provide a statement and was turned over to the Bureau of Corrections to await his advisement hearing.
At that hearing, Assistant V.I. Attorney General Brenda Scales asked that bail be set at $15,000 with no 10 percent provision, while defense requested that Louis be released on the posting of $1,000. Scales revealed that the defendant has a prior criminal matter where he was accused of strangling a previous girlfriend, as well as another matter where he allegedly attacked a relative.
At the conclusion of the proceedings, judge Paula Norkaitis set bail at $15,000 with no 10 percent provision, emphasizing that the bail was cash only.
If Louis is able to post bail he will be placed on house arrest with electronic monitoring and will be required to remain at least 50 feet away from the alleged victim. Norkaitis stressed that the accused is considered a danger, particularly for women. She further asserted that Louis had “sullied” the idea of romance and love based on his alleged actions and actions he had pleaded guilty to in the past.
