ST. CROIX — A man who sustained multiple gunshot wounds about the body during a shooting in Sion Farm Thursday afternoon succumbed to injuries Friday morning at the Juan F. Luis Hospital, confirmed police spokesman Toby Derima.
The victim has been identified as Wayne A. Jerome, who is believed to be either 22 or 23 years old.
According to the initial release on the Sion Farm shooting, at around 5:20 p.m. Thursday, the 911 Emergency Call Center dispatched officers to Sion Farm near the Lew Muckle Elementary School in reference to a shooting.
An investigation into the incident revealed that a Black male was shot multiple times by an unknown gunman in the field adjacent from the school. The victim was transported to JFL via ambulance for treatment, where he was listed at the time as being in stable condition.
The Sion Farm shooting was one of three incidents that occurred in the territory within 24 hours. Another shooting on St. Croix Thursday morning in Little Princess left a 35-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds, and a shooting Wednesday night at a restaurant in St. Thomas left two injured, one of whom had to be airlifted for further treatment because of the severity of his wounds, according to Mr. Derima.
Detectives are actively investigating both incidents, said Mr. Derima, and police are urging anyone who saw what happened to call 911, the Crime TipLine at (340) 778-4950, or anonymously to Crime Stoppers USVI at (800) 222-TIPS.
