ST. THOMAS -- Services will be held in the territory on Thursday consistent with National Day of Prayer activities taking place throughout the United States, Government House announced Wednesday.
Governor Kenneth Mapp officially proclaimed May 4, 2017 as the Territorial Day of Prayer. In 1952, the United States Congress adopted a resolution to set aside and proclaim the first Thursday of May of each year as a National Day of Prayer. This year’s theme is For Your Great Name’s Sake, Hear Us. Forgive Us, Heal Us.
“Leaders, citizens and residents of our Nation and Territory are afforded the privilege of prayer, affirming our spiritual heritage and the principles upon which our nation was founded," Governor Mapp wrote in his proclamation. "We unite with fellow residents of our Nation and our Territory to exercise the freedom we have to gather in prayer with thankfulness while seeking guidance, provision, protection and purpose for the benefit of every individual and our Nation and the Territory as a whole. We are grateful for those who defend our freedoms and ask for peace throughout our territory, nation and world.”
Activities scheduled for Thursday include:
St. Thomas: 6 a.m. – Sunrise Prayer - Lindbergh Bay Water Park Noon – Midday Prayer - Emancipation Garden 7 p.m. – Evening Prayer Service – Emancipation Garden
St. John: 7 p.m. – Evening Prayer Service – Nazareth Evangelical Lutheran Church, Cruz Bay
St. Croix: 6 a.m. – Sunrise Prayer Service – Sunny Isle Amphitheater Noon – Midday Prayer - Government House steps, Christiansted 7 p.m. – Evening Prayer Service - Sunny Isle Amphitheater
