The award-winning musical named "Hamilton", based on the life of Alexander Hamilton — a Founding Father of the United States and native of St. Kitts and Nevis, who lived in Christiansted, St. Croix for several years — will return to Puerto Rico in June.
The creator of the musical, Lin-Manuel Miranda told the Associated Press that Hamilton will be performed in Puerto Rico for two weeks in the aforementioned month, and funds raised will be for the benefit of the Hispanic Federation and education nonprofit, the Flamboyan Foundation.
“I am so proud of the work that both Hispanic Federation and the Flamboyan Arts Fund have done for the Puerto Rican community through their support and funding of grassroots efforts,” Miranda told the AP Monday. “By providing support to activists, artists and community groups on the ground, they have changed the ecosystem for the arts and the nonprofit sector.”
During the June 16 fundraiser, Miranda will reunite the original Broadway cast members Renee Elise Goldsberry, Christopher Jackson and Leslie Odom Jr., to view the event, however they won't perform. Tickets for the fundraiser can now be purchased here.
Organizers are hoping to raise $2 million from the musical and other fundraising efforts for the Hispanic Federation and the Flamboyan Arts Fund, which is a partnership between the Flamboyan Foundation, Miranda, his family, and “Hamilton”, according to the AP.
Hispanic Federation CEO Frankie Miranda stated that the “Hamilton” fundraiser gives nonprofits another opportunity to show donors the importance of continuing to invest in Puerto Rico's rebuilding efforts after the island commonwealth was ravaged by Hurricane Maria in 2017. It was after the storm that the Hamilton musical made its debut in the U.S. territory.
“Investing in Puerto Rico is a premise of hope and progress,” Frankie Miranda told the AP. “So much is being accomplished. But then the attention goes away or only comes back when there is another natural disaster.”
