Virgin Islands athletes were again in fine form this weekend, winning medals and setting records in the process.
In Pennsylvania, Sofia Swindell wowed at the Penn Relays Winter Showcase with a first place finish in the 60m hurdles. Her time of 8.67 was not just a personal record but also a school and facility record, and puts her at 18th in the United States for that event. She was also a hair's breadth away from the VI Under-20 record for that event, currently held by Michelle Smith.
Michelle, meanwhile, set a new national under-20 record over the weekend, with a time of 53.06 seconds in the 400m race at the Razorback Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
Michelle’s run on Saturday also places her second in the world for the Under-20 category, and 6th fastest in University of Georgia's track and field history.
The UG freshman also ran the second leg of the 4x400 relay on February 1, recording a split time of 52.40 seconds. Her contributions helped bring the relay team over the finish line in a time of 3:27.95, the second fastest time in the NCAA.
Meanwhile, Malique Smith, like Sofia, also recorded a win this weekend, this time at the 2025 Legends of Alachua County Invitational in Gainesville, Florida. He secured first place in the 600m with a time of 1:19.41, less than one second slower than the current VI record.

The three young athletes will look to continue their impressive performances during upcoming meets in the weeks ahead.
