Livewire Sports Inc. has announced a strategic partnership with the Virgin Islands Department of Education to send 12 student-athletes to a three-week baseball camp at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.
A non-profit 501c(3) organization established in 2018, Livewire Sports said it is dedicated to equipping student-athletes with the necessary tools and resources required to secure athletic scholarships for college. The organization serves as the primary database for information on Virgin Islands student-athletes, according to a release issued Saturday.
The selected student-athletes, hailing from both St. Thomas/St. John and St. Croix districts, were chosen based on a combination of their skills, attitude, potential, and academic performance, Live Wire said. The Summer Swings Abroad program aims to provide these young athletes, ranging in age from 14-17, the chance to experience intensive, off-island baseball training for three weeks. This initiative comes as a welcome respite for this age group, which has been significantly impacted by the inability to safely play sports because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
"The goal is to send another group of younger student-athletes to a similar camp later in the year," said a spokesperson for Livewire Sports Inc.
Participants in the program will receive twice-daily sport-specific training, three weekly core strength and conditioning sessions, a weekly core mental toughness session, and a coach's training evaluation. Additionally, the student-athletes will be supplied with an Under Armour gear kit, daily meals, and hydration, as well as boarding, all at no cost to the parents.
Expressing gratitude towards their partners and supporters, Livewire Sports Inc. extended thanks to the V.I. Department of Education, the government of the Virgin Islands, the V.I. Department of Sports, Parks & Recreation, V.I. Lottery, Together We Stand Mobile Food Van, parents of the student-athletes, and the broader Virgin Islands Community.
