The Virgin Islands has lost another renowned leader, former six-term legislator and entrepreneur Lloyd Williams.

Just days after the territory learned of the death of Alicia “Chucky” Hansen, former senator Myron Jackson announced that “we have lost another noted native son of the soil.”

In his 12 years in the Legislature, Senator Williams served as Majority Leader, and chaired the Rules and Commerce Committees. During his tenure, he created and worked on legislation to influence the territory’s economic development in areas of insurance and tax incentives. In a statement of condolences following news of Mr. Williams’s passing, President of the 35th Legislature Senator Novelle Francis Jr. described the former senator as being “always steadfast in his efforts to offer legislation that worked in the best interests of the community.”

Mr. Williams’s service as a lawmaker was “informed from his early years as an activist to protect consumers and preserve locals’ access to the beaches,” Senator Francis continued. “Regardless of his role in the Legislature, he worked with everyone.”

Mr. Williams was also deeply committed to community health care, serving as chair of the Board of the St. Thomas East End Health Center Corporation.

The former lawmaker was the owner of Lloyd’s Jewelry Store, and operated a real estate business that dealt with properties across St. Croix, St. Thomas, St. John and Water Island.
