Government House announced Thursday that in a concerted effort to address pressing concerns and foster collaboration for residents of the Virgin Islands, Governor Albert Bryan convened a meeting with members of the 35th Legislature on Wednesday.
The primary topic of discussion was the administration's latest draft legislation targeting the issue of derelict and abandoned buildings. The administration sees the proposed legislation as a pivotal move toward revitalizing communities, enhancing safety, and driving prosperity across the islands.
A standout feature of this proposal is its strong reflection of public feedback. In August, the administration organized two public town hall meetings in St. Thomas and St. Croix. These sessions were instrumental in gathering insights and suggestions from residents, many of which have been integrated into the current draft.
Emphasizing the administration's commitment to transparency and community involvement, Governor Bryan announced that the latest draft of the derelict and abandoned buildings legislation will soon be available for public scrutiny. There will be a 30-day window for public comments, ensuring that the final version of the legislation is well-aligned with the needs and concerns of the Virgin Islands' residents.
Senate President Novelle Francis, during the meeting, pointed out that several senators have also initiated drafting requests concerning the issue of abandoned properties. "The issue of abandoned and dilapidated properties is complex and multi-faceted," Mr. Francis said. "It is certainly one that my colleagues and I are committed to addressing in ways that respect both our community and development."
Additionally, the senators raised questions about ongoing recovery efforts and the status of different projects. To address these, Mr. Bryan, along with key cabinet members and policy experts, provided updates to deepen understanding and highlight the progress achieved.
Governor Bryan, expressing hope for sustained collaboration between the executive and legislative arms, emphasized the joint dedication to furthering the Virgin Islands' residents' wellbeing. According to Gov't House, the governor's vision involves addressing these concerns with transparency, accountability, and active community participation.
Concluding the meeting, Governor Bryan remarked, “I want us to leave here with the understanding that these issues are not just of the administration, but of the people. I want us to work together to accomplish these objectives on behalf of our people. That’s the only way I can see us truly solving these complex issues. I know we can and I trust that we will. But, we have to work together."
