The V.I. Energy Office has announced the launch of the "Equitable E-Mobility Rebate Program," an initiative aimed at revolutionizing sustainable transportation in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
This program is funded through President Biden’s Bi-Partisan Infrastructure Law and supports the Bryan/Roach administration's efforts to enhance clean energy technology accessibility in the community.
VIEO will start accepting applications for the rebate program on January 19. However, the program retroactively includes electric vehicle purchases made on or after October 1, 2023. This initiative is designed to encourage the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and electric bicycles (e-bikes) by reducing the upfront costs for residents.
The Equitable E-Mobility Rebate Program aims to accelerate the shift to clean and sustainable transportation options. By doing so, it contributes significantly to the reduction of carbon emissions and promotes a healthier environment in the Virgin Islands. The program offers substantial rebates for both new and used electric vehicles, as well as electric bicycles, making sustainable mobility options more accessible to a wider range of residents.
Recognizing the limited local availability of electric vehicles, the VIEO has expanded rebate eligibility to include vehicles purchased from licensed dealerships within the continental United States. This decision aligns with the commitment to building a greener and more resilient future and reducing the Virgin Islands' dependence on fossil fuels.
Residents can receive a $5,000 rebate for eligible new and used EVs and $500 for e-bikes. New EVs must have a purchase price under $65,000; used EVs must be under $40,000, within four model years, and have under 20,000 miles. E-bikes must be new from approved local vendors.
The program is exclusive to U.S. Virgin Islands residents, with specific conditions for vehicle registration, title status, purchase price, model years, and mileage.
