ST. CROIX -- Skeptics be damned. Last year's Carnival Meets the Runway, catching this reporter off guard, was a well organized, mesmerizing affair. This year, event organizer Alvin Burke, Jr. is promising even more excitement and, importantly, more troupes.
It has also been dubbed the official kickoff of the 2016-17 Crucian Christmas Carnival.
The idea of Carnival Meets the Runway, which takes place this Saturday at Palms at the Pelican Cove, is to showcase the main presentation of carnival — troupes and costume design — in a few short hours. The event is also an opportunity for troupes to entice onlookers to join their groups before the Adults Parade, which happens on January 7 in Frederiksted.
Women and men, beautifully adorned, make their way up an aisle -- flanked by onlookers on either side -- modeling costume designs of various troupes to the sounds of Soca music. This year's event will be hosted by Temisha Liburt, and will include live performances from Daddy Jones and the Crew, Nikki Brooks and others.

Saturday's affair, the fourth annual, "is going to be a preview of what you'll get on parade day," said Mr. Burke. "Not only that you're going to get the best male and female models, but it's definitely going to be a production; a great show."
The occasion will include 9 carnival troupes, compared to 7 last year. It starts at 8:00 p.m. and a ticket will set you back $25.
"You're going to have a grand time, I can promise you that," Mr. Burke concluded.
