ST. CROIX -- The Eulalie Rivera Elementary School kicked off Red Ribbon Week -- an alcohol, tobacco, and other drug and violence prevention awareness campaign observed annually in October in the U.S. -- with an event on Friday titled YOLO, or "You Only Live Once", aimed discouraging drug use.
On Friday afternoon students took a pledge to remain drug-free during the course of their lives. They later walked to the outside of the school's gate where YOLO letters were attached to the fencing, and served as a pinning board of sorts for the students' ribbons.

The set of events continue on Tuesday with "Wear a Cap Day", which organizers say will signify putting a cap on drugs. Wednesday's event is dubbed "Wacky Socks Day", which promotes "putting a sock" on drugs; and Thursday's affair sees students marching through Estate Grove to discourage the use of drugs, according Ena Edwards-Descote, teacher and Red Ribbon Committee member at Eulalie Rivera.
The weeklong program ends on Friday with an old school disco night dubbed "I Believe In Me", that starts at 5:30 p.m. and runs until 8:00 p.m. Mrs. Edwards-Descote said all of the school's population of 420-450 students will participate in some form.
