ST. CROIX — The V.I. Police Department announced Wednesday that 30-year-old Valatina Sanchez — charged with attempted murder in the shooting of male victim — has turned herself in.
The VIPD said that the 911 Emergency Call Center received information that Sanchez sought to surrender to police. Acting on this information, responding officers located and detained Sanchez in the vicinity of Estate Princesse on St. Croix.
Following her detention, Sanchez was placed under arrest on several charges, including first-degree attempted, first-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment, aiming and discharging, and carrying of firearms openly or concealed. She declined to give a statement at the time of her arrest.
Unable to meet the bail amount set at $100,000, Sanchez was remanded to the John Bell Correctional Facility. Her advice of rights hearing is scheduled for February 8 at the Superior Court on St. Croix.
The arrest of Sanchez follows an incident reported on January 31, when the 911 Emergency Call Center received calls about a gunshot victim on Queen Mary Highway at Catherine’s Rest entrance at around 8:05 a.m. Previously, the VIPD said the incident occurred in Questa Verde. The victim was subsequently transported to the Juan F. Luis Hospital for medical treatment.
Witnesses provided detectives with information that led to the identification of Sanchez as the alleged shooter. According to the reports, Sanchez was seen shooting the victim multiple times. This prompted an island-wide search for her, which initially yielded no results until her decision to turn herself in.
The case remains under investigation, and further details may be disclosed as the legal process continues.
