ST. THOMAS — The V.I. Police Department has thanked the St. Thomas community for responding to Thursday night's waterfront incident.
Efforts from a Good Samaritan and others saved the life of a woman who could have drowned when the vehicle she was in wound up in the sea at the St. Thomas waterfront.
The V.I.P.D. on Friday thanked a Good Samaritan referred to as "The Chicken Man", who played a major role in rescuing the woman. According to reports, the woman managed to get out of the vehicle and the Chicken Man jumped into the water to help her.
The V.I.P.D. also thanked the St. Thomas Rescue, divers: Sgt. David Cannonier, Retired Sgt.Bernard Burke and K. Williams, Kevin Blakey of VI Marine Towing and Salvage, Public Works Commissioner Derrick Gabriel, and Edward Carmona for providing lights during the response effort, and the Fire Department Hotel Company and Sherwyn Wrecker service, all of whom played a role in the recovery of the vehicle and the deceased victim.
V.I.P.D. Director of Communications Glen Dratte told the Consortium late Thursday that the deceased, identified as Castellano Domingo de Orbe, was pronounced dead after being removed from the sea at the waterfront in Charlotte Amalie. The incident occurred after 9:00 p.m. during what police say was an argument between the driver and a woman who was in the vehicle with him.
Mr. Dratte said a V.I.P.D. investigation revealed that the man got enraged and drove the vehicle, an older model Suzuki Vitara, into the water, leading to his death.
Acting St. Thomas District Chief Steven Phillip on Friday stated, "To help a friend is a good thing, to help yourself is also good, but to help a stranger is amazing.”
