ST. CROIX — A shooting incident in Mutual Homes Sunday night resulted in the death of a 24-year-old man, the V.I. Police Department has confirmed to the Consortium — the second homicide on St. Croix in less than 24 hours as gun violence continues to impact the USVI.
Jamari N. Gardner died after being shot at about 6:21 p.m. Sunday, with the VIPD's ShotSpotter detection system registering the incident.
Following the ShotSpotter notification, 911 emergency dispatchers received a distressing call from a woman reporting that her brother had been shot and appeared to be lifeless. Police units and investigators immediately dispatched to the scene and confirmed the homicide.
Authorities found the lifeless body of a black male, who was subsequently identified as Gardener, by his next of kin. He had been shot multiple times and tragically succumbed to his injuries. Emergency Medical Services personnel at the scene were unable to find any signs of life.
In the aftermath of the shooting, a canvas of the area revealed numerous shell casings scattered across the scene. Forensic teams processed the crime scene to gather crucial evidence for the investigation.
Despite an extensive canvas of the area in search of potential witnesses, results have so far proved negative, the VIPD said. The incident is currently being treated as a homicide and investigators are appealing to the public for any information related this crime.
The Sunday night homicide was the second in less than 24 hours. At about 4:21 a.m. Sunday, a man was pronounced dead on the scene after being shot several times in the area of Prince Street in Christiansted. The victim, identified by next of kin as Robinson Ramirez Robles, 29, was in the vicinity of Big Masters Night Club when the shooting occurred, according to police.
