ST. THOMAS — Police on Wednesday arrested a man who attacked a male victim from the back with a machete, causing multiple injuries about the body.

According to the V.I.P.D., at about 11:28 a.m. Wednesday, the 911 Emergency Call Center dispatched officers from the Richard Callwood Command Center to Hospital Ground in response to an altercation.

Upon arrival to the scene, police sought comments from the victim, who said he was attacked from the back with a machete by the suspect, who the victim said struck him several times with the weapon. Thereafter, a physical altercation ensued between the victim and the suspect, which led to the victim sustaining further injuries.

Residents in the area attempted to breakup the fight and were successful, according to the police report. The suspect then fled the area. The victim declined medical attention.

The suspect, identified by police as Steve Corcino (no age was provided), returned to the scene and was identified as the person who attacked the victim. He was placed under arrest at about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, and was charged with third-degree assault.

Unable to post $25,000 bail, Corcino was remanded to the Bureau of Corrections pending his advisement hearing.
