ST. CROIX — A well-known St. Croix barber was extradited from Orlando, Florida back to the USVI on Wednesday to face a number of charges, including cashing a Covid-19 stimulus check twice.
According to V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Toby Derima, on Wednesday at around 2:52 p.m., Dennis Hospedales, age 47 of Estate Barren Spot — a well-known barber on St. Croix — was extradited from Orlando, Florida to St. Croix and placed under arrest.
He was charged with obtaining money by false pretenses, grand larceny, and drawing and delivering worthless checks.
According to the V.I.P.D. news release, the investigation into this matter revealed that on June 2, 2020, Hospedales knowingly and maliciously deposited his Covid-19 economic stimulus check using an application on his mobile phone into his bank account, then subsequently presented the check to a bank and cashed it. A young woman was arrested back in October 2020 on a similar charge.
Unable to make bail of $50,000, Hospedales was remanded to the Golden Grove Correctional Facility pending his advisement hearing.
