ST. CROIX — Curtis Williams, a 36-year-old resident of St. Croix, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison following his guilty plea to unlawful possession of a firearm. The sentencing was delivered by V.I. Superior Court Judge Ernest Morris on March 14.
In addition to the 10-year prison term, Williams was ordered to pay a $10,000 fine and $83,599.18 in restitution for medical expenses incurred by the victim of the shooting.
The case stems from an incident that occurred on August 22, 2021, in the parking lot near the bus stop at 8 West Lane in Christiansted. According to court records, Williams was involved in a dispute with Iran Maldonado, during which he shot the victim multiple times using an illegal firearm. The attack left Maldonado with life-threatening injuries, necessitating extensive medical treatment.
Williams later pleaded guilty on February 5, 2025, to the unlawful possession of a firearm, leading to his sentencing last week.
Virgin Islands Attorney General Gordon C. Rhea lauded the collaborative work of the V.I. Department of Justice and the V.I. Police Department in securing the conviction.
“The successful conviction of Curtis Williams reflects the hard work and commitment of our law enforcement and legal teams,” said Attorney General Rhea. “We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that those who commit violent crimes are held accountable and that justice is served for the victims and our community.”
Rhea specifically recognized DOJ prosecutor Robert Pickett, Esq., Assistant Attorney General from the St. Croix District of the Criminal Division, along with the DOJ Litigation and Victim Services Teams and the VIPD’s Criminal Investigations Bureau for their efforts in investigating and prosecuting the case.
