ST. CROIX — A security consultant is facing misdemeanor assault charges after allegedly attempting to fight his former colleagues in the V.I. Police Department.

According to court documents, officers were at Divi Carina Bay Casino & Resort on the night of April 18, patrolling the Taste of St. Croix event. There, they met Walton Jack, a former VIPD officer, who asked them to help his security personnel move some barricades.

When the police officers declined, saying that the request fell outside their official duties, Jack reportedly became irate, cursing the officers and vowing that he would ensure that they would lose their jobs and remain unemployed.

Police took note of his slurred speech, glassy eyes, his staggering walk and the odor of alcohol emanating from his person. One of the officers said that he touched Jack on the left arm to get his attention, prompting the apparently inebriated man to swing a closed fist at a uniformed policeman.

Missing his target, Jack reportedly overbalanced and fell onto the ground, whereupon officers took the opportunity to subdue and arrest him, according to court documents. After being treated by an emergency medical technician for a laceration to the head, he was taken to the Wilbur H. Francis command police station to be booked.

Jack declined to provide a statement to police, but was nevertheless charged with simple assault. The $5,000 bail was posted as required, and Jack appeared in court on April 19 for an advice of rights hearing.

During his first court appearance, Magistrate Yolan Brow Ross adjusted Jack’s bail downwards to an unsecured bond of $500 to maintain his freedom ahead of trial. His next court appearance is scheduled for May 8.

Jack, a former Lieutenant in the VIPD, was arrested last May on charges of negligent driving and driving under the influence. That case is still making its way through the court system.
