ST. CROIX — A young man was shot to death outside the Thomas Bakery in Castle Coakley near Sunny Isle Saturday afternoon, the V.I.P.D. has confirmed to the Consortium.

V.I.P.D Public Information Officer Toby Derima said the 911 emergency call center received notification of the incident at about 12:11 p.m. A person inside Thomas Bakery when the incident occurred said a loud burst was heard as if three shots were discharged at once. Thereafter, loud screams were heard outside, prompting patrons inside the bakery and other businesses in the area to head out themselves to see what was going on.

On the outside, the gunshot victim, who is said to have been shot in the head, was lying next to a White Jeep Wrangler in a pool of blood. Following EMS's arrival to the scene, the victim was taken to the hospital and was pronounced dead soon after.

The victim was identified as Gyasi Chiverton, 23, of Sion Farm.

Today's homicide was the second on St. Croix and third for the year overall in the territory. On January 12, a man was shot dead at his residence in Sion Farm. And last night at about 7:22 p.m., a man was shot to death in Contant.

The V.I.P.D. is asking anyone with information about this homicide to call the Crime TipLine at (340) 778-4950, or send an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers USVI here.
