ST. CROIX — A man who was critically wounded in a shooting in Profit Hills on October 1 has died, the V.I. Police Department confirmed to The Consortium on Tuesday. His death, along with Tuesday's fatal shooting of 24-year-old Jahmarie Warden in Old Fredensborg, brings the U.S. Virgin Islands' homicide count for 2026 to 42.
The latest tally, according to V.I. Consortium tracking corroborated by the VIPD, includes 25 homicides on St. Croix and 17 on St. Thomas. No homicides have been recorded on St. John this year.
The Consortium first reported the Profit Hills shooting on October 2, after learning that a man had been rushed to Juan F. Luis Hospital in critical condition following gunfire the previous evening.
VIPD Director of Communications Glen Dratte confirmed at the time that the victim had sustained at least two gunshot wounds. Mr. Dratte said the man was breathing and able to speak when the call for assistance was made, but his condition was serious enough that preparations were underway for a possible medical airlift out of the territory.
The VIPD's confirmation Tuesday establishes that the victim subsequently succumbed to his injuries. His identity, the date of his death and whether the medical transfer was carried out were not immediately available.
The confirmation came on the same day that police investigated a separate fatal shooting in Old Fredensborg, where Warden was found unresponsive near a vehicle damaged by gunfire. Officers responding to a gunshot detection alert at approximately 10:39 a.m. discovered the victim, who was subsequently determined to have no signs of life by emergency medical personnel.
No suspect had been identified in the Profit Hills shooting when The Consortium initially reported the incident. Police have also not announced a suspect in Mr. Warden's killing.
