Man Caught Entering Vehicle, Stealing Debit Card to Make Purchases at Home Depot and Kmart

ST. CROIX — A man was caught on camera stealing several items from a vehicle, including a credit card which he used to make purchases at Home Depot and Kmart, the V.I. Police Department has announced.

According to the V.I.P.D., on Feb. 1 detectives from the Economic Crimes Unit initiated a grand larceny investigation which revealed that Joseph Daniel Henschel entered a parked vehicle located in a residential area and stole several items including a Banco Popular debit card, which he used to purchase items totaling $1,472.26 at Home Depot and Kmart stores on St. Croix without authorization.

The V.I.P.D. said this information was obtained after surveillance footage was retrieved and reviewed from the Home Depot Store and the Kmart located in Sunny Isles.

At about 10:59 a.m. Thursday, Henschel, age 44, was arrested and charged with grand larceny, forgery, obtaining money by false pretense, and trespassing.

Unable to make bail of $20,000, he was remanded to the Bureau of Corrections pending his advisement hearing, which has been a scheduled for today.

Henschel in 2020 allegedly held a woman against her will in her apartment for several days while assaulting her during that time, according to police.
