ST. THOMAS — A man who police had already arrested and placed in the backseat of a police cruiser took control of the vehicle and led officers on a chase before being apprehended.

According to V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Toby Derima, on Tuesday at 6:35 p.m., police arrested Rashawn Brooks, age 42 of Oswald Harris Court and charged him with unauthorized use of a vehicle and reckless endangerment.

Brooks, who was detained by officers investigating another matter and was placed in the backseat of the police cruiser at the Bassanio G. David Command Center, managed to climb into the front seat and took control of the vehicle, Mr. Derima said.

Brooks then traveled east on Julian Jackson Drive but was quickly apprehended near the Cyril E. King Airport stoplights and placed under arrest, according to the news release.
