Man Assaults Police Commissioner Richards

ST. CROIX -- A homeless man on Wednesday assaulted Virgin Islands Police Department Commissioner Delroy Richards, V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Glen Dratte has announced.

Mr. Dratte, citing a police report, said that 38-year-old Julian Christopher Williams, above, was arrested at 7:15 a.m. today and charged with simple assault after he attacked the commissioner, who was at a local grocery store.

According to the release, Mr. Richards was at the Jiffy Mart Store in Christiansted purchasing an item, when he encountered Mr. Williams, who exhibited a strange behavior and proceeded to assault the commissioner.

Mr. Williams then fled the scene on foot, but he was later apprehended by police in the Market Square area of downtown Christiansted.

Mr. Williams was remanded to the Golden Grove Detention Center pending his advise-of-rights hearing, after failing to make bail.
