Two people in their sixties, one from St. Thomas and the other from St. Croix, were the latest individuals to die of Covid-related causes in the U.S. Virgin Islands, according to the V.I. Dept. of Health.
"After further investigating cause of death and ensuring notification of next of kin, the Virgin Islands Department of Health is saddened to confirm the territory’s fifty-fifth and fifty-sixth deaths related to Covid-19. The deceased are a 66-year-old male on St. Thomas and a 62-year-old female on St. Croix," D.O.H. said.
The 54th victim was announced by Governor Albert Bryan Monday as a 61-year-old St. Thomas woman, who was hospitalized at the Schneider Regional Medical Center and died on Sunday.
D.O.H. Infectious Disease Specialist Dr. Tai Hunte-Ceasar said Monday none of the 54 individuals who have died from Covid-19 in the USVI were vaccinated against the virus. She also stressed the effectiveness of the vaccines and encouraged residents to get inoculated. "I must remind you that the vaccine has been available to the general public since March 1. All of our deaths have been among unvaccinated individuals. Deaths in the most recent months have been preventable," she said.
Governor Bryan, speaking during his weekly Covid-19 press briefing, shared condolences and prayers for grieving families. He also prayed for frontline workers. "Our heartfelt condolences go out to the loved ones of that young lady and all others who have suffered as a result of coronavirus," he said. "I pray for God's grace and mercy for our residents fighting their best against the virus in our hospitals. I pray for God's protection over our doctors and nurses and health care workers who tirelessly and selflessly work around the clock to provide these treatments that save as many lives as possible."
According to D.O.H., there were 285 active cases as of Monday, 161 on St. Thomas, 108 on St. Croix, and 16 on St. John.
