Governor Albert Bryan has announced the 54th Covid-related death in the U.S. Virgin Islands, the latest victim being 61 years old.
Mr. Bryan said the victim, a St. Thomas resident, was hospitalized at the Schneider Regional Medical Center and died Sunday.
D.O.H. Infectious Disease Specialist Dr. Tai Hunte-Ceasar said none of the 54 individuals who have died from Covid-19 in the USVI were vaccinated against the virus. She also stressed the effectiveness of the vaccines and encouraged residents to get inoculated. "I must remind you that the vaccine has been available to the general public since March 1. All of our deaths have been among unvaccinated individuals. Deaths in the most recent months have been preventable," she said.
Governor Bryan, speaking during his weekly Covid-19 press briefing, shared condolences and prayers for grieving families. He also prayed for frontline workers. "Our heartfelt condolences go out to the loved ones of that young lady and all others who have suffered as a result of coronavirus," he said. "I pray for God's grace and mercy for our residents fighting their best against the virus in our hospitals. I pray for God's protection over our doctors and nurses and health care workers who tirelessly and selflessly work around the clock to provide these treatments that save as many lives as possible."
As of Saturday, there were 209 active Covid-19 cases territory-wide: 122 on St. Thomas, 70 on St. Croix and 17 on St. John, according to the V.I. Dept. of Health.
