Governor Albert Bryan on Thursday requested a 90-day extension to the current state of emergency declaration which otherwise expires on July 6. Approval would carry total months of emergency government operations to nineteen since the first Covid-induced declaration was granted in March 2020.
A state of emergency declaration, usually declared after a natural disaster, gives governors powers they would otherwise not have under normal circumstances.
Through proposed legislation forwarded to Senate President Donna Frett-Gregory, the governor points to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic as reason for the continued state of emergency.
The last extension request, sought in May, asked for 60 days. Mr. Bryan has added 30 days in his latest request and it would remain in effect until Oct. 4, 2021, according to Gov't House.
By law, the 34th Legislature has five days to consider Governor Bryan’s request or the extension automatically goes into effect for an additional 30 days if the Senate takes no action on the proposal.
