Off-Island Lineman Injured By Electricity From Generator Backfeeding To Grid; Latest Update Released

Governor Kenneth Mapp said on Friday during his hurricane recovery press briefing that an off-island lineman was injured after being electrocuted by electricity emanating from a generator that back-fed power into a grid. The incident, which the Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority has warned could happen if standby generators are not turned off when crews are working in neighborhoods, has caused the utility to somewhat alter its restoration plans: Moving forward, when WAPA is working to restore power in neighborhoods, it will bypass homes whose generators are back-feeding power into grids. The bypassed homes will not be restored until the complete restoration of the territory, so Mr. Mapp urged residents to take seriously the warning. Below, find WAPA's latest restoration update.
