Logan, the 2.5-year-old son of Anais Cruz and Claudell Monsanto, died Friday after a lifelong battle with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia. A symbol of strength and hope for many, the news of Logan's passing left many in the USVI in a state of sadness, and residents poured love onto the grieving family who had shared Logan's journey through online portals including social media.
"You turned the sky blue when it was raining. You were always too perfect for this world. Rest easy baby, Mama will come find you," wrote Logan's mom, Anais, on Facebook Friday.
Her remarks inspired nearly 800 responses from supporters who shared encouraging words and condolences. On The Logan Miracle Foundation's Facebook page, where his journey was shared with supporters, a touching poem captured the family's bittersweet journey with the strong boy.
I fought for you The hardest, it made me the strongest
So tell me your secrets, I just can't stand to see you leaving
But Heaven couldn't wait for you
No, Heaven couldn't wait for you
Heaven couldn't wait for you
No, Heaven couldn't wait for you
So go on, go home
We laughed at the darkness
So scared that we lost it
We stood on the ceilings
You showed me love was all you needed
This became my reality today 1/7/22
Public servants shared condolences. "My office, family and I join the people of the Virgin Islands in remembering the life of baby Logan," wrote Senator Samuel Carrion on Facebook and Instagram. "Logan was an everyday superhero who taught us that miracles truly are possible. His fighting spirit inspired others and his bright demeanor brought light to our lives. Logan reminds us still, “there is no foot too small that cannot leave an imprint in this world”. May you Rest In Peace, Logan."
"Anais, Monique and the entire family circle, my prayers are with you as no words can comfort this pain you are feeling," wrote Senator Kurt Vialet. "Your loss is shared by many who knew and loved Logan. May you feel the strength of God as the entire Virgin Islands community and many abroad hold you close in prayer. Please accept my sincerest condolences."
The Consortium in September 2021 covered an event held in the town of Christiansted in honor of Logan's fight against the disease. There, his grandmother, Monique Cruz and a gathering of supporters marched in solidarity with the family while also bringing attention to the form of cancer as part of Leukemia Awareness Month.
Leukemia is cancer of the body's blood-forming tissues, including the bone marrow and the lymphatic system. When Logan was born, he appeared healthy and was described as a happy, bouncing baby. But on December 28, 2019, at 7 months, he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia, the most common form of Leukemia. Logan's case, however, was rare because of his age. In Sept. 2020, Ms. Cruz provided the Consortium with some information about the family's battle, a summary of which was also posted on his foundation's website.
While he received treatment on the mainland, where he died Friday, Logan will be brought home to St. Croix to be laid to rest.
"St. Croix I’m bringing Logan home, my heart hurts so much," reads a post on the Logan Miracle Foundation's Facebook page.
