Fort Mylner shopping center fire.

ST. THOMAS — Fire broke out overnight Sunday at the Fort Mylner shopping center on St. Thomas and has apparently engulfed a significant portion of the strip mall. Located across the parking lot from the Pizza Hut and Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants and to the southeast of Banco Popular, the series of businesses which included a barber shop and mini mart sit in a building that is decades old.

The shopping center has been a landmark on St. Thomas' Weymouth Rhymer Highway for years.

Photos from the scene show thick, acrid smoke billowing from the roof and bright licks of orange flame as the interior of the building burned early this morning. Some have described the blaze, which has been underway for several hours, as not yet under control at about 5:30 a.m.
