Water Salute exercise for Caribbean Airlines' inaugural flight to the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport in the BVI.
Caribbean Airlines marked a milestone on Monday with the successful landing of its inaugural flight, BW294, at the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport in the British Virgin Islands. The new route is part of the airline's ongoing efforts to strengthen connectivity across the Caribbean, proving more travel options within the region, according to a release from the carrier.
A brief ceremony was held at Trinidad’s Piarco International Airport to celebrate this occasion. During the event, Caribbean Airlines Chief Executive Officer Garvin Medera spoke of the airline's commitment to the region. "As a regional airline, we remain committed to enhancing connectivity across the Caribbean, and the addition of Tortola to our schedule marks an important chapter in Caribbean Airlines’ expansion," he said. "This is our first-ever connectivity to the British Virgin Islands, and this means that we now have 24 destinations within our network, connecting the region, North and South America."
According to the release, the inaugural flight's arrival in Tortola was celebrated with a traditional water salute, and passengers were greeted with a vibrant cultural display hosted by the British Virgin Islands Tourist Board & Film Commission. The event included the participation of key government officials and industry stakeholders, such as Premier and Minister of Finance of the BVI, Natalio Wheatley; Minister of Communication and Works, Kye Rhymer; and Junior Minister for Culture and Tourism, Luce Hodge Smith.
Medera also highlighted the airline’s operational capacity in Tortola, stating, "With four flights a week – on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday – we will bring over 540 seats into and out of Tortola weekly." This expanded service includes connections via Barbados twice weekly on Thursday and Saturday, as well as connections through Antigua and Puerto Rico on other days.
The carrier said this new route to Tortola not only enhances the airline’s position in Caribbean aviation but also supports economic development in the region by promoting tourism and facilitating business travel.
Flights from Trinidad to Tortola operate on Monday and Wednesday with connections through Antigua and Puerto Rico, and on Thursday and Saturday with connections via Barbados.
