The Government of the Virgin Islands on Wednesday finalized the purchase of the Firstbank building in downtown Christiansted, the Office of the Lieutenant Governor has made known. The property, which spans .36 acres, was purchased on behalf of the OLG and was in the making for several years.

The building will house the OLG’s Division of Banking, Insurance and Financial Regulation, the Division of Corporations and Trademarks, the Office of the Tax Collector, the Passport Acceptance Facility, and the VI SHIP/Medicare program. An announcement this week from the Lieutenant Governor’s office indicated that payments for services provided by these divisions will also be collected at the location.

“I am pleased that we were able to acquire this building in the beautiful and historic town of Christiansted where we will continue to offer exceptional customer service with ample parking for our customers,” said Lieutenant Governor Tregenza Roach, who explained that GVI initially wanted to rent the building, but leapt at the opportunity presented when First Bank instead offered to sell the property.

Currently, the building is being prepared to receive its new occupants, and OLG says an announcement of the official relocation of the various divisions will be forthcoming at the appropriate time.

Lt. Governor Roach offered thanked to the 34th Legislature for appropriating the $1.3 million needed for the purchase of the building.
