The Office of the Lieutenant Governor will be moving its offices into the building in downtown Christiansted currently occupied by Firstbank, Lieutenant Governor Tregenza Roach made known during a post-reelection announcement interview with the Consortium Tuesday night.
The interview, which also included Governor Albert Bryan, focused on a number of topics, including the leaders' performance during their almost four-year tenure, and why they believe their administration should be given four more years to govern.
While highlighting some accomplishments of his office, the lieutenant governor revealed that because of mold issues at Gov't House, the OLG is in the process of purchasing the building and would move its operations there once the sale is closed.
"We are getting ready right now to complete the purchase of a building in Christiansted, and we're going to move our employees out of those mold-infested offices in Government House," Mr. Roach said. Asked by the Consortium whether it was the Firstbank building, both Mr. Roach and Governor Bryan said yes.
The building, which is located on King Street is owned by Firstbank, according to records of the property. In 2014, Firstbank planned on closing the branch permanently, people familiar with the matter at the time had told the Consortium. However, that decision was later changed and the branch remained open.
Current operations at the branch a minimal, with customers mainly using the ATM attached to the bank. Firstbank has several other branches on St. Croix, including in Golden Rock, Sunny Isle and Frederiksted.
