Frenchman's Cove, St. Thomas USVI.

ST. THOMAS — An elderly man visiting St. Thomas with his wife was pronounced dead at the Schneider Regional Medical Center, in what the V.I. Police Department has categorized as a possible drowning incident.

According to the V.I.P.D., on Thursday at approximately 11:12 a.m. the 911 Emergency Call Center dispatched officers from the Richard N. Callwood Command to a possible drowning at the beach at Frenchman’s Cove, St. Thomas. Upon the unit’s arrival, officers met with Emergency Medical Technicians who were in the process of transporting a male to the Schneider Regional Medical Center.

Shortly after arriving at the hospital, the male was pronounced deceased, according to the V.I.P.D.

A preliminary investigation revealed that on Thursday at approximately 11:00 a.m., the male, who was visiting St. Thomas with his wife, went swimming at the Frenchman’s Cove beach. Soon thereafter, the male called out for help; his wife was able to pull him ashore and perform CPR until Emergency Medical Technicians arrived, the V.I.P.D reported.

Next of kin identified the male as 81-year-old Courtney Nelthropp.

Though the incident appears to be a possible drowning, the V.I.P.D. says a cause will be determined upon the return of autopsy results.
