A marine weather update from the National Weather Service in Puerto Rico on Wednesday warned of hazardous coastal and marine conditions due to an arriving northeasterly swell.

This weather phenomenon is affecting the Atlantic waters, local passages, and particularly the north and east-facing beaches of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, according to NWS.

The conditions, which pose significant risks for marine and coastal areas, are expected to worsen and spread into the upcoming weekend.

Marine Conditions

The seas are forecasted to build, reaching heights of 6 to 10 feet, with occasional seas surging up to 13 feet. The peak of this event is anticipated on Thursday, but hazardous conditions are expected to persist into the weekend. Small Craft Advisories have been issued for the Atlantic waters and local passages in response to these developments.

Surf Zone Hazards

Beachgoers are advised of life-threatening swimming and rip current conditions. Large breaking waves, ranging between 6 and 13 feet with occasional higher breakers, are expected. In light of these dangerous conditions, a High Rip Current Risk statement has been issued for the north and east-facing beaches of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, effective through at least the latter part of the workweek.

Moreover, a High Surf Advisory remains in effect from this evening through at least Friday for the northern coast of Puerto Rico and St. Croix.

Additionally, minor beach erosion is anticipated as a result of this northeasterly swell. Authorities advise residents and visitors in these areas to exercise caution and stay informed about the latest weather updates.
