Authorities in the Caribbean are monitoring an area of low pressure that seems highly likely to develop into a tropical depression or storm later this week.

AL 97, currently off the coast of the Cabo Verde Islands, is poised to become a tropical depression “within the next day or so while it moves generally westward,” according to Monday’s 2 a.m update from the National Hurricane Center.

The chance of further development into a tropical storm remains a possibility, as “environmental conditions appear conducive for later development.”

The current projected track for AL 97 takes it just northward of the Caribbean archipelago’s north-eastern edge. Residents in the area should therefore be monitoring its progress across the Atlantic.
