The Virgin Islands Police Department has detailed events it has scheduled for Police Week, which started on Sunday and will run through May 18. In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day, and the week in which said date falls in as police week.
Peace Officers Memorial Day and Police Week pay tribute to the local, state, and federal law enforcement officers who serve and protect us with courage and dedication.
The V.I.P.D. events include the honoring officers both fallen and alive for their service and sacrifice. "Being a police officer is often stated as a thankless job, but I say thank you and I appreciate you," said Acting V.I.P.D. Commissioner Jason Marsh. "At the same time, we must remember those who have given their lives protecting our community. Let us continue to embrace their families as our family."
Mr. Marsh added, "In these times where we are the targets while we try to protect the members of this community, [we have] to be mindful and careful of our surroundings because we, like our community, have family members that love us and want us home safely."
