ST. CROIX -- Smoke accumulation from the overnight fire that destroyed HH Tire & Battery on St. Croix has adversely affected the air quality of a number of schools westward of the business, the Department of Education has announced.

The following schools have announced immediate dismissals on Monday, November 28:

  • Ricardo Richards Elementary School
  • Alfredo Andrews Elementary School
  • John H. Woodson Jr. High School
  • Elena Christian Jr. High School
  • St. Croix Central High School
  • St. Croix Educational Complex

Students are being fed lunch and school buses will arrive at campuses between 11-11:30 a.m. to transport students to their regular drop-off locations. However, parents who are able to may begin signing students out immediately.

D.O.E. says it will issue an update later today relative to the status of schools.
