The Virgin Islands Police Department on Friday said a body discovered on February 23 in a "heavily wooded" and thorn-ridden area of St. John, was confirmed by autopsy to be that of a 70-year-old man who police said had strangely vanished on the night of Monday, February 12.
According to V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Glen Dratte, the autopsy found there to be no foul play in the death of Mark Moroney.
In the V.I.P.D.'s initial release concerning the incident, Mr. Moroney was said to have ventured outside his home and into his car to fetch a flashlight after a power outage. But he never came back, according to his wife, prompting an island-wide search that included the V.I.P.D. and National Park Service rangers, Mr. Dratte said.
His wife contacted police at about 8:00 p.m. that night. Mr. Moroney was last seen alive wearing a blue polo shirt and khaki slacks.
