ST. CROIX -- The National Governors Association (N.G.A.) this week announced its new leadership for 2016-2017, along with members of its leadership committees. The N.G.A. appointed Governor Kenneth Mapp as a member of the Homeland Security and Public Safety Committee, which focuses on homeland security, the National Guard and homeland defense, criminal justice and public safety and veteran’s affairs.
The committee will be chaired by Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson with Oregon Governor Kate Brown serving as vice chair.

- Utah Gov. Gary Herbert; and
- Virgin Islands Gov. Kenneth Mapp.
Mr. Mapp has an extensive background in law enforcement. After graduating from high school, he was accepted for training by the New York City Police Department, and joined the N.Y.P.D. to serve in Brooklyn’s 83rd precinct. He later became an officer of the Virgin Islands Police Department, members of which elected him president of the Police Benevolent Association.
The N.G.A., founded in 1908, provides a bipartisan forum for governors to exchange views and share best practices; identifies priority issues and works with governors to establish bipartisan positions to influence key federal policies; and develops innovative solutions to state policy challenges and provides tailored technical assistance to governors. It is headquartered in Washington, D.C.
