The U.S. Department of Agriculture (U.S.D.A.), Division of Food and Nutrition, approved the Department of Human Services' (D.H.S.) waiver request for an extension of the Virgin Islands’ Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (DSNAP), D.H.S. announced Monday.
“We continue to press forward with our efforts to serve the needs of the public as it pertains to the DSNAP. Our waiver request for an extension of DSNAP is rooted in our ability to adequately meet the nutrition needs of eligible households while confronting ongoing challenges of stability within the local infrastructure,” said D.H.S. Commissioner Felicia Blyden.
According to the release, in approving the DSNAP request, U.S.D.A.'s Division of Food and Nutrition highlighted the Virgin Islands supporting information to justify the extension, stating that, "the application site volume was significantly larger than anticipated of the first four days, and connectivity issues stemming from limited telephone and internet access on USVI have presented application processing challenges.”
The extension has been granted for three days, which begins on Thursday, following the original end date of Wednesday. The extension will end on Saturday.
The locations open at 7:00 a.m. and run until 6:00 p.m. Originally, the sites were to open from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
