An electrical fire broke out Friday night in a classroom at Alfredo Andrews Elementary, but St. Croix District officials say they have been working through the weekend to clean up the classroom and the incident is not expected to interrupt normal school activity when students return on Wednesday.
This is according to St. Croix District Superintendent Gary Molloy, who said a small fire ignited after an air conditioning unit in the classroom sustained water damage. However, V.I. Fire Services investigators have confirmed foul play is not suspected in the incident.
District Maintenance Director William Matthew said crews have been on the school's campus since Friday and have been "working rapidly to restore all damages."
The District is still in the process of assessing the cost of the damages.
Territory public schools were closed Nov. 10 and 11 due to professional development meetings for teachers and in observance of Veterans Day. Classes will resume on Wednesday, Nov. 12.
