ST. THOMAS -- A man here was beaten repeatedly with a 2x4 piece of lumber on Tuesday for failing to give another man one dollar, VIPD Communications Specialist Sakeeda Freeman announced this afternoon.
According to Freeman, citing information provided to police by the victim, on Tuesday at about 11:04 a.m., officers were dispatched to the Roy Lester Schneider Regional Hospital in response to a man being treated for injuries sustained during an assault that occurred in the area of Market Square.
Upon arrival at the medical facility, officers met with the victim, who stated that while walking in the area towards the rear of the Salvation Army located on Torve Strade, an unknown male approached him and asked for a dollar. The victim said he replied no to the man and continued walking. But as the victim made his way towards Vester Gade, the unknown male attacked him from behind; striking the back of the victim’s head with what was later identified as a 2x4 piece of lumber, police said.
The unknown assailant continued to beat the victim, striking his face and both arms. The victim was eventually able to push his assailant away and the unknown man ran away from the scene.
The victim was unable to provide officers with a description of his attacker. He sustained a laceration above the right eye, contusion to the rear of his head and lacerations to both arms. He was treated for his injuries and released by the medical facility.
