Motorists in St. Croix have been urged to “plan ahead” for trips to the Henry E. Rohlsen Airport as the Department of Public Works begins work on Airport Road over the holiday season.
The announcement was made by Government House Director of Communications Richard Motta, who indicated that the government is “moving post haste to begin the mill and pavement of the entire airport road from east to west.”
Funding for this particular section of infrastructural work totalling $1,763,650.20 was approved during a recent Legislative session. “This project is finally going to be coming to fruition this holiday season,” said Mr. Motta. While he did not possess “a specific timeline for completion,” the communications director for Government House said that he would “go on [a] limb and say 30 to 60 days.” The contractor, identified as Marco Paving, is set to commence improvements this week.
During a press briefing on Tuesday, Mr. Motta urged forward thinking as roadworks progress. “I know a lot of us like to wait until the absolute last minute and race our cars to the airport to make our flight,” he said. “Give yourself a little bit more time to either get to the airport to make your flight or to pick up your loved ones,” he warned.
Meanwhile, increased traffic at the Henry E. Rohlsen Airport is anticipated beginning December 12th, as JetBlue Airways recommences flights between St. Croix and Puerto Rico – a development that has been well received by the government. “This marks another milestone in the administration's ongoing efforts to enhance airlift to and from the Virgin Islands, ensuring better connectivity for our residents and visitors alike,” Mr. Motta commented on Tuesday.
The new flight option is “not just a win for St. Croix, it's a win for the entire Virgin Islands community,” the communications director stated. “This added route plays a critical role in strengthening our tourism product, stimulating our economy and improving our overall quality of life,” he said, extending “heartfelt thanks to JetBlue Airways for their commitment to our territory” on behalf of Governor Albert Bryan Jr.
