ST. CROIX — Liberty VI is expanding its fiber-optic network into five areas of St. Croix, with construction expected to make high-speed internet service available to 654 additional homes by October 31, according to the telecommunications company.
The work is taking place in Estate Hope and Carlton, Sally's Fancy, Estate St. George and Estate Retreat, where crews are installing aerial fiber-optic cables on existing utility poles to extend Liberty's Fiber to the Home broadband service to residential and business customers.
The projects were already underway when Liberty announced the expansion on October 14, with the company targeting completion by the end of the month.
“We continue moving forward with our Fiber to the Home construction projects so more locations in the territory can have access to our fiber fast internet,” said Catherine Kling, general manager of Liberty VI.
The installation work involves placing fiber-optic infrastructure along existing utility routes, allowing additional households to access Liberty's fixed broadband network once construction is completed.
According to the company, construction is scheduled between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., although working hours may change depending on the activities being performed.
Liberty said traffic controls and safety equipment were installed before work began. While the company expects minimal disruptions, motorists and residents in the affected areas should anticipate possible delays because of lane restrictions and partial road closures.
Drivers are being urged to exercise caution, particularly along narrow roads where installation crews and equipment may be operating.
The latest expansion follows earlier fiber construction projects on St. Croix, including work announced in March in Cotton Valley and Sierra Verde, where Liberty sought to make high-speed internet service available to another 238 homes.
Liberty said its broader fiber construction program has already made more than 27,000 locations on St. Croix and St. Thomas ready to access its broadband service.
The company will continue publishing construction schedules and updates through its website to help residents plan their daily commutes around ongoing work.
