Liberty has rolled out additional spectrum to enhance mobile connectivity in the U.S. Virgin Islands, delivering stronger signal strength, increased speeds, and improved coverage, including in hard-to-reach and rural areas.

“This deployment delivers a major improvement in the consumer experience,” said Chuck Page, Liberty’s vice president of technical operations on Tuesday. He explained that the added spectrum—paired with newly deployed mobile sites—will accommodate projected increases in data usage while boosting signal strength inside homes, buildings, garages, and other areas where coverage has traditionally lagged.

The recent upgrade marks the third phase in Liberty’s network expansion, with further enhancements anticipated later this year when additional midband spectrum is deployed.

Liberty said that currently, its network covers 99.4% of homes and businesses in the USVI through strategically placed mobile sites that connect to a resilient, underground, ring-protected infrastructure. The network boasts triple redundancy with three geographically diverse core platforms capable of independently serving the entire population, ensuring continuity of service even during power outages or natural disasters.

Each cell site is backed by battery or generator systems, and the territory is also equipped with mobile disaster-response units like Cell on Wheels and Satellite Runners. “Our network’s efficiency was put to the test last year when Tropical Storm Ernesto hit our territory,” said Ravindra Maywahlall, Liberty VI’s general manager. “Our network was up and running and kept our customers connected to their loved ones."

Liberty’s performance has not gone unnoticed. Earlier this year, Virginia-based Global Wireless Solutions (GWS) named Liberty Mobile the most reliable mobile network in the USVI. The company also earned accolades in GWS’s OneScore ranking for best overall mobile performance in St. Thomas, and top marks for voice and voice quality in both St. Thomas and St. Croix. Additionally, Liberty was recognized by Ookla Speedtest as the Fastest Mobile Network in the USVI for the second half of 2024.

Liberty VI is a subsidiary of Liberty Latin America, a communications giant operating across more than 20 countries in the Caribbean and Latin America. In the USVI, Liberty currently offers 5G mobile service to 95% of the population, fixed wireless internet, and is building a fiber-optic network to deliver high-speed internet and voice services to both residential and business customers.
